Buses To Amecon Small clarification, please?

I saw in the venue information that, for those of us without cars, Amecon can be reached by train and then bus from Crewe and Stoke. I was wondering if anyone knew whether seats on these buses need to be prebooked (like coaches), or whether they're just plain public buses, pay your fare as you board etc? (And if so, any vague idea what the fares are?)

Many thanks in advance! :)

Does depends, I could only guess for a single it would be between anywhere from £1 up to about £7 going from Stoke...
Wouldnt think it would go higher than that for the distance covered...

Timing and reliability not their strong point
Who does the buses round there?

Unless you know exactly where you are going I'd suggest grabbing a few taxi's from the station.

It's about 5 miles to the campus from the Stoke-On-Trent train station. That would be at least 15 minutes by car not taking traffic into account. Probably only cost effective if there's 4-5 of you (or you can grab a few extra people to share the fare).

As mentioned on the Venue page of the AmeCon website (http://amecon.org/info/venue), you can take the First-PMT 25 - that goes through the Campus. It's a public bus however, so expect non-convention folk on there with you, but being the bus that goes to the Keele campus you should find it's mostly AmeCon folk.

Hi all,

I'm a Keelite, so I can give you some well informed information about anything around our little green patch.

Buses

If you're arriving from the Stoke-on-Tent station then indeed get the 25 towards Keele.
Use the bus stop on the opposite side of the road from the station: http://tinyurl.com/keele-bus

If you're arriving from Crewe then get on the 85 towards Keele.

For all public transport queries check the Travel Line West Midlands website: http://www.travelinemidlands.co.uk/. Make sure you use the vacation time tables, as the conference is out of term time for Keele University.

Fares are as stated are £1.80 per way, they are £1.45 for students with Keele cards but I am unsure if they accept NUS cards (worth a try).

Taxi's
Good firms are:
Knights - 01782563888‎
Sids - 01782565200

If all else fails use Roseville - 01782613456

Both Knights & Sids will give you ringback.
Fares will typically cost between £5-£7 between Stoke station, they will be greater from Crewe.

I'll probably grab a taxi. Might be more expensive but I know I'm gonna end up in the right place!

You say that but I remember being saddled with a useless taxi driver at one point during Aya '09. The vast majority were fine, knew exactly where we wanted to be. But this one time we ended up being dropped about a mile or more away from the convention venue, and this was after stopping in the street and getting me to ask a local directions! Worst of all he had a sat nav, why he didn't just put "Warwick Arts Centre" into the thing I do not know.

Sorry to sorta gravedig this old thread but I'm planning on Taxiing there from Stoke station and wondered if there would be anyone travelling on the Thursday to get in Stoke-on-Trent at around 12.30pm and catching the cab with me and fare-sharing to Keele. Makes it cheaper, no? (that or anyone from Lincoln travelling on the 9.31am train who wants to help alleviate 3 hours of boredom and get stoked for Ame?)

I'm undecided about whether to get the bus or taxi yet. I'm arriving Friday morning so perhaps there'll be a few other people me and my sis can team up with. In regards to the bus though, can I ask if anyone knows if the bus stops right outside the venue/accommodation? Also, is it obvious when you get there or will I need to ask the bus driver to give me a shout when we arrive?

Following g256's post above, I've just had this passed to me by an attendee - may be useful to those who are travelling in from the Crewe area…

Quote

While arranging travel to Amecon, I found out that D and G buses also run a service from Crewe Railway Station to Keele University, and their timetables are far more accessible than Arriva's.

A huge thanks to Amy for this - I'll be looking into it and will post further info soon.

Edit: that's not too bad at all, actually - looks a similar trip as Sunderland from where I live. Head on over to the Timetables link at dgbus.co.uk - it's the number 85 bus you're looking for, like g256 said. I'll post up the PDF once I can get to a more solid netlink.

Have to ask, what type of buses do they run (as long as its one of the Low floor buses, given the amount of suitcases that could be dragged onto them.)?

*goes off to look for a stoke timetable*

Many thanks to all for the info! I really should have come back to check on this sooner... x.x;

Having looked at the timetable from Stoke, I'd hazard a guess that the following stops all seem to be in the general uni area:

Keele, Three Mile Ln, Opp, Sneyd Arms PH
Keele, Main Rd, Opp, Holly Cross Hall
Keele, Main Road, Opp, Lindsay Hall
Keele, Main Rd, Opp, Horwood Hall
Keele, Main Rd, Opp, Darwin Building
Keele, Main Road, Adj, Barnes Hall

Does anyone know which would be the best to aim for if you're staying in the on-site accomodation? I know that the first and last stop above are only 6 mins apart, but not knowing where you're going can make getting off at the wrong stop incredibly daunting!

Many thanks in advance again :)
